Review: Barry M Flawless Mist & Fix Makeup Setting Spray – Matte Finish

Barry M Flawless Mist & Fix Setting Spray Matte Finish

We all want our makeup to last, whether is for a night out, long day or ensuring it withstands the heat/weather we all want to stay looking perfect all day. I am always on the hunt for a budget friendly setting spray and with an offer on a Boots a bit back, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to try something new. The Barry M Mist & Fix Setting Spray comes with two finishes either Matte or Dewy, personally I prefer a matte finish which is the one I will be reviewing here today. So, what’s the verdict on the Barry M Flawless Mist & Fix, Makeup Setting Spray Matte Finish?

First and foremost, the packaging a topic I usually start with as its always the first thing that attracts you to a product and really makes a huge difference to what you think of it. I must say I find the packaging for the setting spray a little lack lustre, the spray bottle itself is what you’d expect so it’s not where I am disappointed. Within a few days, the label started to peel off, a thick tacky label which is unattractive and makes me want to hide the bottle away. I am aware the aesthetic is very much Barry M but it’s made me realise that other brands such as Primark make a much more sophisticated and more aesthetically pleasing item for the same price point.

There’s no hidden tricks, with these products just a simple mist on the face and your makeup should stay all day. This product has a nice light mist which isn’t too wet or too big droplets which will affect the integrity of your perfectly applied makeup. What I will say is the spray does not spread too far so you need to make the effort to spray round your face opposed to two pumps and your gone. For the budget end through I rather make the effort to ensure coverage rather than have a non-light mist so I can deal with the compromise for such a low price point.

Now the most important thing, did it keep my face matte and my makeup last all day? The result, well kind of. I don’t tend to have an issue with oiliness so the fact my face was still matte at the end of the day wasn’t a huge surprise but I am currently preferring a matte finish to a dewy one, which influenced my decision process. As for the long-lasting effect? It was somewhat there, I did put it properly to the test trailing it on a hot day, and one of those days at work where I never seemed to sit down at my desk for any longer than 5 minutes. Both occasions my makeup held reasonably well, staying reasonably well but it was clear that my makeup had started to wear away on my forehead and some other spots. A full-on day or heat, just isn’t in this products capability and I think I maybe expected a little too much of it. Where I am really finding a love for this setting spray though is when wetting by brush before applying powder based products it just adds something extra to the colours and the staying power of what I wear so it will be put to good use.

Unfortunately, the Barry M Flawless Mist & Fix Makeup Setting Spray, Matte Finish didn’t quite live up to my expectations. Let me know in the comments which setting spray I should try next, I’m looking for that holy grail item so I cannot wait to hear your opinions.

NXY Soft Matte Lip Cream in San Paulo

nxy-soft-matte-lip-cream-in-san-paulo

Matte lips are always big this time of year and the longevity they provide is always a plus for when you want your makeup to last. If you’ve read my lipstick diaries you know I have been trying to push myself the past few months with lip colour, and after the success of my dabble with the NXY Soft Matte Lip Cream in Copgenhagen (why not check out my review here) I decided to try another one from the range this time a pretty pink.

I must say I love the packaging, although its simple and there is nothing special I love the velvety matte sort of finish of the lid its nothing much but it makes the product feels like a little touch of luxury even though it isn’t really. I’m also so glad this is a doe foot applicator; it is easy to use and apply an even coat all over the lips. A thin coat with dry in about a minute, drying matte and dry while a thick coat with take two/three minutes to dry and leaves a slight tacky feeling that you won’t generally feel just mainly when you press you lips together.

nxy-soft-matte-lip-cream-in-san-paulo

I love the finished look of a pretty matte pink lip, wearable and long lasting, I love the fact you just don’t have to think about it once it’s on its pretty much there for the long haul with the exception of food or drink. Drink its not so bad, just a little bit of fading in the centre of the mouth but this is pretty much expected. I have to say compared to the other NXY Lip Cream I own this fades easier and quicker with food, leaving only a very unflattering line around the edge or your mouth. Its light wearing strong lip liner and a pale lipstick, so if you want to wear this for a dinner date or lunch with friends I just recommend wearing something else unless you want to touch up.

This layers up nicely for reapplication purposes, you can reapply on top of what was there before and it looks perfectly fine. Although this is a drying product, because let’s face it what matte product isn’t drying it doesn’t split or stick to the dry areas of the lips it’s more of a comfort thing. Occasionally by the end of the day my lips start to feel uncomfortable and dry but 10 hours in, it’s a proper day wear just make sure you moisturise before and after to keep you lips happy and healthy.

nxy-soft-matte-lip-cream-in-san-paulo-swatches

It’s a super pretty cover, offers longevity and I’m glad it’s part of my collection. I definitely recommend checking out the NXY Soft Matte Lip Creams as the availability and ease of trying in the UK increases, but if I had to pick one I’d go for the NXY Soft Matte Lip Cream in Copenhagen. The formula is slightly variable between products so I am not sure what others in this line shade up like, but some are better than others although none are awful.

Have you tried the NXY Soft Matte Lip Creams and if so what do you think? Have you tried NXY since the UK launch and what do you think of what’s on offer.

Review: NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Copenhagen

nxy-soft-matte-cream-in-20-copenhagen

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while you’ll know I’ve been pushing myself to wear lipstick and push myself to wear stuff outside my makeup comfort zone, you can check out my journey so far in my Lipstick diaries (find the first part “A Love Hate Relationship”, and the follow up “Pushing the Boundaries”), and thank you for all the support on this journey. At some point, I decided to push myself in at the deep end and buy the NXY Soft Matte Lip Cream in Copenhagen, so how did I find it.

I’ve heard mixed review about the lip cremes more for a hit and miss formula, but the colour was so beautiful I couldn’t resist. With NXY been a recent launch in the UK I ordered this from Feel Unique  (check out my haul here), but had never actually swatched it as the NXY counters in Boots are only just starting to stretch across the country. So, I went in a bit blind but was so happy to give it a go.

I must say I love the packaging, although its simple and there is nothing special I love the velvety matte sort of finish of the lid its nothing much but it makes the product feels like a little touch of luxury even though it isn’t really. I’m also so glad this is a doe foot applicator; it is easy to use and apply an even coat all over the lips, As soon as I got it I had to swatch and play, it’s such a deep rich colour that you could wear a thin layer and make it more red or apply a slightly thicker coat and get a darker more vampy shade. Which I found to be a pleasant surprise, I never expected diversity with a product like this although how thick you apply it obviously makes a difference to the drying time. A thin coat with dry in about a minute, drying matte and dry while a thick coat with take two/three minutes to dry and leaves a slight tacky feeling that you won’t generally feel just mainly when you press you lips together.

So, the first day I wore it I went in at the deep end and wore it to work, if I didn’t I might never have done it and it was the best way to get some honest opinions. I work with a lovey group of girls, but they are also honest and will just bluntly let you know if something looks good or not. I was so please to get loads of complements on it. Wearing it to work also provided a good wear test, as you drink coffee, chat and eat lunch as well as the length of time you can wear as well as reapplication it is the perfect wear test as you must commit to the full work day.

nxy-soft-matte-lip-cream-in-copenhagen-swatch

I must say it wears well, there is minimal transfer onto a mug when it dries and is definitely long lasting. The main place it wears off first is in the middle, this is mainly due to eating and drinking which is not unexpected if I used a straw and didn’t eat it could last hours. It also doesn’t crack so you’ve got no patchiness of unpleasant wear on the lips. I will say as the day wears long it starts to feel drying, I definitely couldn’t commit to matte everyday.

Overall this is a beautiful long lasting lipstick which I have fallen head over heels in love with, so much so that I now regret not going bold longer ago. Are there any other colours in the range you think I should try? Also let me know your favourite lip cremes or liquid lipsticks in the comments below.

Top 5 Lip Products Under £5.00

Top 5 lip products

I thought I would start to do a bunch of top 5s, sharing the top 5 makeup products within a certain category although the schedule and frequency of the posts yet. Here we look at my favourite lip products that are all under £5, as who doesn’t like to look good on a budget. I feel like all of these have been mentioned before, but here is me declaring my love for them

P.s. Love Matte Long Lasting Lipstick in Whisper

First up is one that initially I had a love hate relationship with loving the colour but often finding it drying. That is the P.S. Love Matte Long Last Lipstick in Whisper, which you can see my full review here it is a muted purple pink and is a great neutral colour with a little bit of a oomph. It works well with a range of makeup looks and as long as you moisturise before and after you will be fine. Available from Primark for £1.00.

mua lipstick in14 bare

Staying in line with neutral we now have the ultimate everyday nude, the Makeup Academy Lipstick in 14 Bare. Rich, creamy and opaque this lipstick is a dream to apply and wear, with only minor touch ups every couple of hours if you wish but due to the nature of the colour and the fact it fades evenly meaning you don’t have to touch up. I also love MUA lipsticks as they have a great formula and a really affordable price point they are great for trying new things out. Available from Superdrug and online for £1.00.

Rimmel London Exaggerate Lip Liner in East End Snob

I’m going to brief with the third one in the list, the Rimmel London Exaggerate Lip Liner in 63 East End Snob. I know there’s been a lot of hype and love for this item, and it’s often sold out in stores but it’s such a perfect muted pink colour. It goes with a lot of other lip colours but looks amazing on its own and as a lip liner it lasts all day, you can find my full review for it here. Available from Boots and Superdrug etc. for £3.99.

Rimmel London Lipstick in 08

This next Rimmel one is a total cheat as I am so in love with it I’ve slipped it in as it’s over budget. The Rimmel London Kate Moss Long Lasting Lipstick in 08, is a creamy pink colour which I really struggle to explain. It is my go to colour, no matter what makeup stand I’m at I pick up this kind of shade but this is by far my favourite lipstick I own of this shade type as it’s so smooth and comfortable on the lips. Available from Boots and Superdrug etc. for £5.49.

I am finishing off with The Body Shop Mango Lip Butter, the best tip balm/treatment I have ever used and it is so affordable. I use this twice a day and it keeps dry and cracked lips at bay, also it smells amazing, so if you have dry lips look no further than the body shop. Available from The Body Shop for £4.00.

So those are my top 5 lip products for near enough £5.00, all amazing products which are really affordable. And if you need any more excuses to be enabled and to go shopping, buying and trying everything on this list would cost you £15.48! You’re welcome.

Empties #8

Empties #8

Another empties for you again today, something that I feel as though I am always doing so I like to spread them out and they end up backing up. Saying that I am unsure if I would want to do a monthly empties as I feel as though it might be loads one month and nothing the next. My current method I feel as though works as I make the post when it feels worth it to do so, so let me know what you think monthly empties or when I have a significant amount of empties. This is a long once so brace yourself.

makeup empties

Soap and Glory Kick Ass Concealer in Light: This was a huge dud for me, not only was it was too dark but the texture was completely wrong for me, making my skin look dried out and barely blending. I was initially put off by the too dark colour but tried it anyway for review purposes, I was so disappointed I never got round to the review. I finally managed to finish it by using it as a eyeshadow primer as its still a better primer that the soap and glory eyeshadow primer and I hate wasting my money.

Would I repurchase this: bottom line, no. There are way better stick concealers out there or even doe foot concealers in the drug store for much less.

Soap and Glory It’s About Prime Eyeshadow Primer: This was another Soap and Glory dud and if you’ve gathered from above it was useless. It barely extended the life of my eyeshadow and worst of all it made primers that didn’t crease previously, crease when using this underneath. Also for the same price you can get a travel sized Urban Decay Primer Potion, and the urban decay travel sized contains more. So spend your money on the urban decay primer potion faultless and it costs the same. I don’t know if the other colour is better as I have the nude champagne colour but I’m not willing to try.

Would I repurchase this: another rather obvious no, opt for urban decay travel size as mentioned above same price for slightly more.

Off topic but am I the only one who Soap and Glory products don’t work for, I haven’t tried the brow products and the bronzer is alright. I think it is an occasion where it is a brand that doesn’t work for me but if it works for you go for it. Still there skin care and bath products are in general really good but I think I won’t bother with the makeup anymore.

Rimmel Fix & Perfect Pro Primer: I’m still not sure who recommended this one to me and it was you I’m so sorry, this is amazing. My favourite primer is still probably my bareMineral primer but this is way more affordable and will be one that I will continue to purchase. A thick cream primer that just sets up your skin nicely and meshs well with other Rimmel Foundations. Personally I find that Rimmel does some of the best foundations within the drug store, does anyone else find this?

Would I repurchase this: most definitely.

Rimmel London Wake Me Up Concealer in Ivory: This is a great concealer and a good level of brightening as it is the wake me up formula, it is definitely more of under eye rather than a spot concealer due to the brightening properties but it’s a very good drug store concealer.

Would I repurchase this: yes I already have a second one.

Saiva Med Lip Care: I’ve had this for ages and its started to look a bit off so I’m getting rid of it. It has no scent but is great at treating and hydrating the lips and I’m trying to look out for another one, only problem is my mum picked it up in Lidli so I might have to get looking online.

Would I repurchase this: If I ever find it again yes, great for treating damaged lips.

P.S. Love Egg Shaped Makeup Sponge: This has done me since February/March time I think but it’s got passed its best and it just looks worse for wear every time I attempt to clean it. Although it is fairly firm I really love applying my make up with this it just blends everything so easily and helps me look flawless.

Would I repurchase this: I already have.

skincare empties

Lacura Facial Cleansing Wipes for Normal Skin: These I picked up from Aldi on a whim as I thought tesco had stopped doing their everyday wipes but magically they are back. These were alright as far as wipes go and they were relatively inexpensive although I cannot remember the exact price, less than £1.00 anyway. Generally really good and managed to move most of the makeup. Good for if you want to take makeup off before doing a proper routine later or just to clean up your face part way through the day if it’s a bit grimy.

Would I repurchase: probably, not in a rush to repurchase but I wouldn’t not get them again.

Superdrug Deep Action Anti-Blemish Gel: Most of my skin problems are hormonal, time of the month and all that, so I cannot prevent them and all I really have to do is make an effort to reduce them. This is where this came in handy, in order to reduce spots especially the big ones that seem to magically appear and you think you’d need a miracle to get rid of them. Sure they aren’t magically gone in 12 hours but when does that ever happen. It does however, significantly reduce the amount of time it’s there.

Would I repurchase: Yes, I already have but I always wait until superdrug has a regular offer such as 1/3-1/2 off own brand skincare.

Superdrug Deep Cleansing Facial Sheet Mask: I love sheet masks as they are so simple yet this was a bit of a miss for me, I love there refreshing sheet mask. This semi stung when it tingled and smelt like old talcum powder, yeah so basically not worth it.

Would I repurchase: No way!

The Body Shop Vitamin E Cream Cleanser and The Body Shop Vitamin E Hydrating Toner (Travel Sizes/60ml): I am doing these as a pair as I’m only used these as a pair, I have mentioned them in previous posts and I really enjoy them. I am not sure how to describe the scent but it’s very subtle, and they go on so smooth and easily leaving your skin feeling amazing. Also they are highly effective at removing makeup

Would I repurchase: probably.

Simple Kind to Skin + Brightening Eye Makeup Remover Pads: I got these for travelling which you will be able to see in my travel toiletries post here. These are so-so they do a decent job at removing makeup but not perfect, I prefer the Halo eye makeup remover pads. They are good for travel and not a bad buy. Yet with the travel size make up removers and cleansers becoming more common I think I am less likely to buy these sorts of things while travelling.

Would I repurchase: unsure.

deoderant empties

It is somewhat worrying that I have enough deodorants to warrant to move them out of random and move them in to a section of them own. To be honest two of them are miniatures which makes it slightly better.

Sanex Dermo Pro Hydrate Anti-Perspirant Deodorant: I think this was in my last empties too as I brought them on a multi-buy offer, I am not loyal to any one deodorant I just tend to buy what’s on offer. Yeah its alright and does its job there isn’t much to say.

Would I repurchase: yeah why not.

Dove Go Fresh Anti-Perspirant in Pomegranate and Lemon Verbena (Travel Size): Although these travel sized ones aren’t value for money, I find them so irresistible and cute I cannot help buying them. Also in the summer months it’s sometimes nice to keep one in your bag because you know sweat. This is my all-time favourite deodorant scents and I regularly buy the full size version of this.

Would I repurchase: Yes!

Sure Women Long Lasting Protection in Bright (Travel Size): I never normally get sure products but I wanted another miniature and this seemed like the best option. I actually thoroughly enjoyed it and might look to try more sure deodorants in future:

Would I repurchase: Probably.

random empties

Colgate FluriGard Daily Rinse: I love this mouth wash, it really freshens your breath and cleans your mouth. I know most of the time all mouth washes do the same thing and this is on the pricier side of mouth wash but I couldn’t imagine using anything else. It was first recommended to me by my orthodontist when I got my braces when I was 10/11, so yeah I’ve been using this for a good 10 years now I’m not going back now.

Would I repurchase: Definitely.

Nailene Ultra Quick Nail Glue: I tend to buy primark nails as they are so pretty and tend to be well made, especially for £1-£2.00 per set but the glue is a bit so-so. Therefore I buy this amazing nailene glue, it really does the job and takes ages to dry up so I can take ages between wearing false nails. Highly recommend it for whatever nails you buy and buying this for one set of Primark nails is cheaper than buying an elegant touch set and they look just as good.

Would I repurchase: Definitely.

Quite a healthy mix of empties this time. Have you tried any of these products and if so what did you think of them.

Morrison’s Sensitive Aloe Vera Shave Gel: I’ve gone through a number of these now and I know it has appeared in a few empties, it is a brilliant inexpensive shave gel and leaves my legs soft and smooth. This is a staple in my bathroom cabinet.

Would I repurchase: I always do.

Gillette Satin Care Pure & Delicate Shave Gel: I actually liked having the smaller size for ease of travel, meaning I could keep having soft legs while away as I feel like shave gel makes such a different. I will definitely look a pick up the smaller sizes if I’m going away again it is definitely worth it.

Would I repurchase: yes.

Cussons Carex Complete Strawberry Laces Refreshing Hand Gel: I think I have mentioned it before that I don’t like alcohol smelling gels. This didn’t smell like strawberry laces but it had that synthetic strawberry scent and I really enjoyed it, other than the smell it’s a hand gel and does its job a definate must in my bags.

Would I repurchase: yes but I’m not fused by what my hand gel I have as long as I have one.

Argan Oil Deep Moisturising Foot Pack: I love foot packs but this one left my feet feeling super odd, I think I’ll go back to the peppermint or tea tree foot packs from now on.

Would I repurchase: no.

Phew! That’s everything and it can now all go into my recycling, well everything that is recyclable of courses. Have you tried any of these and what did you think of them.

P.S. Love Matte Long Lasting Lipstick Review

P.S Love matte lipstick

So all the way back in February/March I picked up loads of Primark P.S. Love Goodies, which I gave all of the a miniature review (which you can read here). However at the time I couldn’t find any of the lipsticks, but I went in the other day and saw this and simply could not resist despite being like so many others in my collection.

So I picked up the P.S Love Matte Long Lasting Lipstick in Whisper, which is beautiful muted pink so is a perfect lip colour for any occasion. The main think I notice straight way was that despite being called a matte lipstick it has these small flecks of glitter in it which seems a really weird but thankfully this does not show when you put it on. It applies really smoothly and is highly pigmented although it is a tiny bit on the dry side, which can be common with matte lipsticks especially at this price point. Saying that it is not at all drying on the lips, so is actually very comfortable to wear (initially).

P.S Love Matte Lipstick in whisper

Lip

Although the formula goes on nice if definately dries your lip out the longer you wear it so balm up is my advice. I lasts very well and although it fades I feel as though it fades evenly meaning you don’t need to worry about touch up as it leaves a leaves a sort of stain. I have to say I like this lipstick I like the colour but even two weeks after my initial purchase I am finding that I am not reaching for it at all instead choosing my rimmel lipsticks ect. So although these are nice and cheap, I’d say if you want the cheaper end of lipsticks opt for MUA or Make Up Revolution at only £1.00 (so 50p cheaper) you get a much nicer product or even move up to the Rimmel lipsticks, regardless I don’t think I would rebuy it. Yes its nice, but there is better out there in the drugstore so I wouldn’t bother.

Have you tried the P.S. Love Matte lipsticks and if so what do you think? What are your favourite drugstore matte lipsticks?

Day 102: Soap and Glory It’s About Prime Eyeshadow Primer Review

P1030532

P1030535

Another day, another make up review and this time its Soap and Glory’s Eyeshadow Primer in the shade Bright Light. Bright light is a whitey/nude shade which I picked over the smoky one as I thought it would be more versatile.

I’m always a bit mixed on the Soap and Glory packaging, much like I am with Benefit, the names are adorably cute but the packaging has that 50s/60s pin up vibe which isn’t my style but I appreciate the effort that’s gone into it. The applicator is your typical doe foot applicator when you can simply dab in on and smooth over with your ring finger.

P1030533

P1030534

It applies easily and smoothly so no problems there and as directed on the box I waited the 30 seconds before applying eye make up. My make up became beautiful and pigmented, looking absolutely stunning. It works well at helping my make up stay on all day on Saturday I did my make up in the morning and it all stayed in place until evening.

There is just one down side with the product no matter how little primer I put on I ended up with creasing which was highly unexpected considering the eye shadows I used never normally crease. I am completely perplexed as to why this product causes creasing. I think I will try and play around with this product a bit more however, I cannot think of much else to try so suggestions are welcome.

Overall I would not repurchase this product and I don’t recommend trying it as its a waste of money. Have your tried this and what are your thoughts? What do you recommend for eye primers. Available at Boots for £8.00.
